DESCRIPTION
The Selmer Bundy II Alto Saxophone bearing serial number 11976XX was manufactured by Selmer USA in Elkhart, Indiana during the late 1980s to early 1990s, representing one of the final production periods of this highly respected student model. Although Selmer did not maintain comprehensive public serial number records beyond approximately 875,000, instruments with seven-digit serial numbers beginning with "11" are generally recognized as belonging to the later years of Bundy II production.
Incorporating design elements inherited from the historic Buescher saxophone company, the Bundy II became one of the most successful student saxophones ever produced in the United States. Its reputation was built upon exceptional reliability, ease of maintenance, and the ability to withstand years of demanding use in school band programs and marching ensembles.
Constructed from heavy-gauge yellow brass and finished in clear lacquer, the Bundy II has earned a reputation among educators and repair technicians as an "indestructible tank." The instrument was specifically engineered to endure the rigors of daily rehearsals, transportation, performances, and practice while maintaining dependable playability and stable intonation.
Compared to the original Bundy model, the Bundy II introduced several refinements, including the relocation of the Low B and Low B♭ keys to the right side of the bell, an improved left-hand pinky table, and the addition of its distinctive wire-style key guards. These changes modernized the design while improving serviceability and durability.
Tonally, the Bundy II delivers a warm, centered sound with strong projection and excellent ensemble blending characteristics. Drawing inspiration from classic American saxophone designs, the instrument offers a focused tonal core that performs well in concert band, marching band, jazz ensemble, and private study settings. Paired with a quality mouthpiece, the Bundy II is capable of performance that exceeds expectations for a student-level instrument.
Our featured instrument has been played extensively over the past several decades and exhibits honest cosmetic wear throughout. The keywork retains much of its original luster, with only minor finish wear visible on some keys. The body displays numerous feather scratches, light pings, and areas of finish smudging consistent with normal use. Additional scuffing is present on the bow, and several small pings are visible along the back side of the body. Despite these cosmetic imperfections, there are no significant structural concerns.
Our technician has adjusted the instrument for General Playing Conditions to ensure reliable playability. Whether you are purchasing your first saxophone or searching for a durable instrument for marching band use, this Bundy II remains an outstanding value. Included with the instrument are the Original Hard-shell Case and a stock Mouthpiece.
