DESCRIPTION
The Yamaha YTR-634 is a highly regarded vintage professional Bb trumpet from Yamaha's early professional lineup. Built in Japan during the 1969–1978 production run, it's remembered for its sophisticated design, responsive playing characteristics, and its strong connection to legendary trumpet designer Renold Schilke. Based on serial number 0124XX and the production sequence for the model, this example was likely made around 1970–1971, placing it among the earlier YTR-634s and squarely in Yamaha's historic "purple logo" era.
Schilke's influence runs deep here. The YTR-634 is closely associated with the architecture of the Schilke B5/V5, and the combination of relatively lightweight construction, a medium-large .460" bore, a reverse leadpipe, and a red-brass bell adds up to a horn that is exceptionally free-blowing, responsive, and tonally versatile. The 5-inch red brass (gold brass) bell and red brass leadpipe deliver a warm, dark, and complex tonal character, while the light build keeps response and flexibility intact across the registers.
That versatility is the point. The YTR-634 can produce a rich classical sound as easily as it delivers the projection and immediacy jazz, big band, and commercial playing demand. Players move easily between registers while keeping a focused, expressive core to the sound, which is a big part of why this model remains a favorite with vintage trumpet enthusiasts.
This particular instrument has been well maintained over the years. There are minor feather scratches and light dings or pings on the body structure, but no dents and no repairs. Our technician has adjusted it to general playing condition, and it ships with a hard-shell case and a Yamaha Model 11 mouthpiece. For an advancing player looking for a vintage professional horn with real character, it's a fantastic choice for every style of music making.
