DESCRIPTION
This is a full-size violin made in the traditional European style, carrying a "Stradivarius" model label inside the body. That label indicates the instrument was built in the Stradivari tradition or on a Stradivari-inspired model — it is not evidence that the violin was made by Antonio Stradivari himself. Thousands of violins produced by European workshops and trade makers in Germany, France, Bohemia and surrounding regions during the 19th and early 20th centuries were built after the models of celebrated Italian masters and carried facsimile labels referencing Stradivari, Amati, Guarneri and others. The Smithsonian Institution specifically notes that the presence of a Stradivarius label alone has no bearing on whether a violin is an authentic Stradivari instrument.
The violin is outfitted with a traditional ebony fitting package — ebony fingerboard, ebony tuning pegs and ebony tailpiece — along with an ebony Dresden-style chin rest and one metal fine tuner on the tailpiece for precise adjustment of a single string while the remaining three are tuned with the friction pegs. Ebony is the traditional choice for violin fittings thanks to its hardness, durability and ability to be precisely shaped and polished, and the Dresden chin rest's lower profile and medium-depth cup suit players who don't want a tall rest under the jaw.
Showing some minor age, this German-made Strad copy has a warm and resonant sound. There's no feasible way to pin down its exact age, though we believe it to be roughly seventy to eighty years old and a German import. The exterior shows usage on the top, back and sides in the form of minor scratches, scrapes and light markings, and violin tape added during the last ownership has been left in place for the next performer. We have adjusted the violin for general playing conditions and installed a new set of D'Addario Prelude strings. An Aubert bridge, added by the previous owner, sits in the proper position to be most effective.
The instrument comes with a brand-new basic wood bow — it will need to be rosined up before first use — plus a brick of rosin and the original case, which shows some modest wear on the edges. Altogether it's a practical outfit for a player looking for a traditionally styled violin with a complete basic playing setup. Note as well that no individual serial number is present, which is not unusual for an older European workshop or trade instrument; such violins were typically identified by labels, stamps or country-of-origin markings rather than modern serial numbers.
