DESCRIPTION

The JHS Fumble turns one of the unlikeliest stories in boutique pedal history into a compact, affordable tone-enhancement tool. After JHS discovered that the clean side of the NOTADÜMBLË V1 accidentally contained the wrong circuit, players started asking for that mistakenly included sound as a pedal of its own. The circuit traces back to a Dumble BBC-1 unit that JHS reverse engineered for John Mayer, connecting it to the FET-style clean boost sounds often associated with players like Larry Carlton, Eric Johnson and Robben Ford.

It's a clone of a clone with real pedalboard utility. JHS later discovered that the original BBC-1 itself appears to draw heavily from a 1970s Barcus Berry acoustic preamp design, and that unusual lineage gives the Fumble its personality. It isn't a high-gain drive, a traditional transparent overdrive or a typical clean boost — it behaves like a JFET preamp that adds size, clarity and articulation before your overdrives, into a clean amp or at the end of the chain.

The two-knob layout is simple, but the Input control doesn't work like the gain knob on most boosts. Output is the master volume, while Input simultaneously attenuates bass and front-end gain entering the circuit. Fully clockwise, the signal stays full, open and louder; rolling it back gradually tightens the low end while thinning and focusing the response. That makes the Fumble equally at home as an always-on boost, a JFET preamp into pedals like a Timmy, King of Tone, Klon or Morning Glory, a front-end push into a dirty amp, or a solo lift near the end of the signal chain.

Into a clean amp, the Fumble adds presence and clarity without pushing things fully into overdrive. Into a broken-up tweed, a Plexi-style amp or a gain pedal, it makes the response feel larger, tighter and more defined — especially with the Input rolled back for a more focused attack. True bypass switching, 9V DC center-negative power and a compact enclosure assembled in Kansas City round out a pedal built for players shaping touch sensitivity and note definition rather than chasing heavier saturation.
