YORKVILLE YSM1P Details top

YSM1p Overview
Building on the success of the Yorkville studio monitor line, the active YSM1p uses the same cabinet as and similar components to the popular Yorkville YSM1, including a rugged 6.5" shielded 100-Watt woofer and shielded 1" silk dome tweeter arranged in a symmetrical, vertical configuration with the drivers mounted slightly forward to minimize reflections off the cabinet face. A precisely tuned 2" cylindrical port directly below the woofer increases bass response and allows cabinet size to be kept compact. The YSM1p incorporates a bi-amped power module that delivers 115 watts (85 Watts of power to the woofer, 30-Watts to the tweeter) and generates less than .05% distortion at full power. The YSM1p also features +9/-6dB input trim, defeatable limiter and specialized tweeter overpower limiting and woofer over-excursion limiting.

Due to the popularity of the YSM1, a concerted effort was made to keep the overall sonic characteristics of the YSM1 when designing the YSM1p and its electronics. Like the YSM1, the YSM1p is a compact, active, near-field studio monitor designed to accurately reproduce the signal from a recording and mixing chain without contributing sonic coloration. It has clarity and bass response that you would expect to hear from a much larger cabinet and is suitable for home and project-studio recording as well as sound reinforcement applications.

It reproduces timbres with near pinpoint accuracy and produces pristine sound which defines the finest details and harmonics of the input signal. The rock-solid YSM1p is constructed of 3/4" MDF with a 3/4" thick PVC clad MDF baffle, and features heavy internal bracing as well as ample internal dampening material, ensuring that their are no unwanted bass resonances.

YSM1p Features
Unique to active near field monitors in this price range, the YSM1p features user selectable filtering. A series of dip switches on the back of the monitor allow the engineer to select overall tone shaping for the cabinet. This allows the end user to tune the monitor for location, (i.e. Full Space for use centered in the room (+2dB boost @ 20Hz to 80Hz) ½ space for use against a flat wall (0dB boost or cut), or ¼ space for use in corners (-2dB @ 20Hz to 80Hz). This ensures more flat frequency response, regardless of location in home studio, writing room or professional studio. An additional user selectable high frequency filter (+2dB boost @ 10kHz to 20kHz) has been added to allow further tweaking of the monitor to individual tastes. Inputs are XLR and ¼" TRS balanced. The YSM1p features a blue power LED and a red input clip LED on the front of the monitor for quick and easy status checking from the engineer's chair. The cabinet is finished in an attractive, charcoal gray vinyl that resists scuffs and is easily cleaned.

These speakers are crystal clear, and wow are they loud. Take a few minutes and read the manual though. They are very versatile to adapt to the space of your studio. If you have a small studio, make sure you use the rear panel to adjust to this or a pair of these will leave you with ringing ears. I wish they had a volume control on them rather than just having an input trim....but the input trim does work very well and can cut back about 20dB- (enough to not purchase a monitor control unit yet.) For monitors with neutral sound, multiple input types, and the ability to stand up to Genelecs, these are the way to go. Not to mention Yorkville's incredibly warranty...!

I have mixed and written scores for over 400 TV shows, 2 surround movies and countless corporate shows using Tannoy monitors of various shapes and sizes. They have always translated well to multiple formats, and as always, you get used to the sound of a certain monitor and it's idiosyncracies just like a musical instrument. I am unexpectedly pleased with the sound of these YSM1P monitors. I bought them for my home studio, where I usually just get down my music ideas and then bring them into the main studio for mixing. These YSM1P's are very transparent throughout the frequency spectrum, and they sound crisp and tight in the low end, something I did not really expect from a 6.5" woofer. I actually have replaced a set of Tannoy 800's running off a Hafler 3000 with these YSM1P's. The bottom end is tighter, and these speakers rival the Tannoy 800A powered speakers in our surround room. The controls on the back of the cabinet are easy to use, and make a discernible difference in the sound, making it easy to fine tune the speakers without changing the overall eq in the room. I am very happy with this purchase, as these were not the speakers I had originally intended on buying when I called Musicians Buy, but after some discussion, my salesmen suggested I would be very pleased with these monitors, and I am. These monitors are not just good because of the price, they are just plain good!
