Yamaha N8 Digital Mixer W/FireWire Interface Price: $799.99

The Yamaha n8 Digital Mixing Studio is a mixing console with an analog-like mixing interface which boasts ease of operation for professional quality recording and mixdown. Connecting a computer to the mixers IEEE 1394 port enables you to configure an ideal recording environment with seamless integration into Cubase 4.

The mixer can handle up to 8 channel inputs, mixing them to stereo outputs and the 16 in/out FireWire connection to record them in a DAW. Each monaural input jack features an XLR jack with a phantom power supply and a newly developed compressor that adopts Sweet Spot Morphing technology with various compressor presets. One input supports Hi-Z input for direct connection of an electric guitar or bass. All input channels feature a full 3-band (high/mid/low) equalizer and share a built-in digital reverb.

With Cubase AI 4 a special version of Cubase 4 is included in the package so that you are ready to plug in and record.

Ease of operation

Analog-like mixing interface enables you to bring your sonic imagery into reality. The mixer can handle up to 12 channel inputs mixing them to stereo outputs. Each monaural input jack features an phone and XLR jack with a phantom power supply, which enables you to connect a wide range of instruments and devices, from condenser microphones to synthesizers and other line-level instruments. Input channel 4 supports Hi-Z input for direct connection of an electric guitar or bass.
Computer connection via a single IEEE 1394 cable

A single cable can do the trick. Connect a computer with an IEEE 1394 port to the n12 using an IEEE 1394 cable to transfer audio and MIDI signals between the mixer and Cubase or other DAW.

Link with Cubase

Install Cubase 4 (Cubase 4, Cubase Studio 4, or Cubase AI 4) on the computer, and the n8 will link to Cubase and operate together seamlessly. For example, you can record the n12 input signals to Cubase as is, or mix Cubase audio tracks on the n8. You can also turn on and off the monitor for the VST effects or control the transport section and tracks remotely from the n8.

High-quality sound

Mono channelstrip n12 Based on the examination of existing head amp circuits, a new head amp circuit has been developed that provides higher quality and superior musical characteristics. The Pad switch turns each channel pad on and off. When it is turned on, the input signal is attenuated by 26 dB. Use the high pass filter to cut off frequencies below 80 Hz. With the Phase switch you can invert the phase of the channel's signal.

The Input Select switch determines whether the analogue input signal or the DAW signal (the output from Cubase or another DAW) will be routed to the channel. By this you can either mix the analogue signals coming from the physical inputs or the digital signals coming from the computer.
Newly developed compressor

The n8 includes a newly developed compressor that adopts Sweet Spot Morphing technology. The mixer provides various compressor presets that represent the condensation of extensive professional engineering experience. Your sound can be at pro level instantly with an easy operation. Use the Morph control to select from the different compressor settings (or morphed settings betwenn them) and the Drive control to determine the amount of compression.

Three-band EQ on each channel

Each input channel features a full 3-band (high/mid/low) equalizer, providing easy sound shaping to suit your preferences. The Mid band is semiparametric to offer you a more detailed control over the sound.
Digital reverb at your service

A built-in digital reverb can be shared by all input channels. If a computer is connected to the mixer, you can also apply digital reverberation to output from Cubase or another DAW, as well as to microphone and other instrumental sounds.

Use Aux Send 1 to route the channel's signal to the Aux bus. Use this control when you are sending a mix monitoring signal to the musicians.

The Pan control determines the stereo position of the monaural input channel. Stereo Input channels feature a Balance control which determines the volume balance between the left and right stereo channels. Odd channel signals are fed to the L bus, and even channel signals are fed to the R bus. For example, rotate the Balance control all the way to right to output only the even (right) channel signals.
Soloing an muting

The Solo switch turns the Solo function on and off. Turn this switch on, if you want to listen to certain channels without changing the mix contents or signal path.

Use the On switch to turn each channel on and off (muting). When the switch is turned off, the channel signal will be sent only to the AUX bus.
Fader controls

Each input channel features a 60mm fader volume control, each equipped with a input meter consisting of four LEDs.

Use the REC and the ST switches to route the channels signal either to the recording bus and/or the stereo bus.

With the Wet Switch you can determine if you want to hear the dry input signal from the analog input of the channel or the wet signal coming back from the computer, processed by VST effects or such.

Control Room monitoring function

Control Room n8 The n8 features a monitoring function dedicated to the Control Room (Control Room Monitor function). You can connect one monitoring speaker set (stereo) to the mixer and select which source you want to monitor.

Use the Dimmer switch to temporarily lower the monitoring volume without readjusting the control room volume level - for instance if you want to have a conversation in the control room. The Mute switch mutes the control room monitors.

DAW remote control function

DAW Control n8 This section features switches to remotely control the basic functions of the DAW software connected to the n8. Transport controls, track select controls, controls to engage the recording status, and others.

The n8 supports two different modes of the way it works together with the connected DAW: In the Stereo Mix mode the n8 will monitor the Stereo Output from the DAW. The Hardware Mix mode enables you to mix the audio tracks from the DAW through the hardware of the n8.

Allen & Heath Zed-24 USB Mixer Price: $699.00

The ZED-24 has a fantastic pedigree which comes from nearly 40 years of making mixing desks for the professional sound community. The audio circuitry is based on years of continual development and refinement and the performance of all the elements within the mixer is has been perfected to ensure the very best sound quality possible.

This is a mixer for anyone, from entry-level to professionals, who appreciates fantastic sound, rugged build quality and imaginative feature sets. Itll be equally happy running your gig on stage, recording live or mixing down in your studio at home.

Weve teamed up with major software supplier, Cakewalk, to bundle its SONAR LE music creation and audio production software with ZED, giving you a fantastic, high spec digital audio workstation.

24 channels of British sound - and USB!
The Allen & Heath ZED-24 live mixer gives you the quality you've come to expect from Allen & Heath in a compact 24-channel configuration. DuoPre preamps represent A & H's latest technology, while flexible 3-band EQs on each mono channel feature tailored frequency and response. The ZED-24 gives you a variety of great input options, as well as easy USB connectivity for computer integration. Allen & Heath have made a live mixer that lives up to their stellar reputation with the versatile ZED-24, at a great price.

Inputs
In addition to the sixteen mono channels there are four stereo channels, each with a main stereo input on jack sockets, and with the ability to take additional stereo inputs from phono sockets or from the USB audio input, flexibility gives you control. In all, ZED-24 boasts 129 different controls on its front panel. Sixteen mic/line channels are provided on ZED-24 - plenty for mics or DI boxes for larger bands or demanding applications requiring more inputs than the ZED-14. 4 stereo line inputs, 3 with dual inputs. All inputs have independent gain control.

DuoPre
Based on the proven preamps from the hugely successful PA series, the ZED series has new DuoPre pre-amps, which use a two stage design, with carefully controlled amounts of gain in each stage. When amplifying the signal from the XLR input, the gain range is huge - 69dB of range to be exact - and is very evenly distributed around the gain control, meaning better control of signal level. Most of the gain comes from the first stage, so unwanted noise is kept to a minimum. Line level signals are simply plugged into the second stage of the pre-amp by using the line input jack socket, which has the great advantage of less noise when using the line input.

EQ section
ZED-24 features a responsive 3-band, swept mid frequency design with MusiQ - optimized slope (or Q factor) for equalizing individual instruments. HF and LF also boast Xtra Boost giving you extra control.

Auxiliary sends
4 aux sends are provided, of which 1&2 are prefade for foldback monitoring, and 3 & 4 post-fade for effects sends. A stereo signal can be sent from auxes via USB to computer to create 2 separate record feeds independent of the main LR mix (1&2) and or used as FX sends (3&4).

USB
Getting audio to and from a computer easily is now a common requirement for live sound and music production. The way we have implemented this on ZED is super-flexible and super-easy! No longer do you need to fiddle around the back of your PC to get to the soundcard inputs, only to find that the levels are all wrong and noisy. Just plug in a USB lead to your ZED, select the USB routing on the mixer and the device on your computer and that's it! Quality audio to and from your PC or Mac. Three switches provide different send/return configurations for recording, playback and utilizing external FX.

Build
At this level, most mixers are built using a single, flat PCB with all the pots and switches attached at right angles. ZED-24 utilizes individual vertically mounted channel circuit boards with each rotary control fixed with a metal nut to the front panel - making a much more robust product that will resist damage and give years of reliable use. ZED also has professional 100mm faders for ultimate control over your levels.

Bundled with SONAR LE
Allen & Heath have teamed up with Cakewalk to bundle SONAR LE with this ZED mixer. The two team up together in many ways - for example straightforward recording of a stereo mix, recording tracks individually to build up a song, or for inserting a SONAR LE effects plug-in.

Allen & Heath ZED-24 Features:

Allen & Heath ZED-12FX USB Mixer Price: $499.00

ZED-12FX Multipurpose mixer with FX for live sound and recording.

Complementing the existing ZED series, the ZED FX has been developed around an FX chipset purely for the new model. Our DSP engineers have been working hard, crafting and refining beautiful reverb algorithms. The effects are available nowhere else - this quality and integration is only available from the ZED FX.

16 essential time-delay effects add to the already bulging feature set. The mixer is ideal for small groups who dont want to carry around an effects unit with their gear but who still want great quality FX at their gigs and on their recordings.

In addition to the DuoPreTM mic pre-amps, 100mm faders and MusiQ EQ section which are shared with the whole ZED range, the ZED FX has 16 unique effects, designed by our DSP team, here in Cornwall.

ZED FX

ZED FX are easily controlled using 3 buttons and 9 LEDs. Quickly tap the ideal delay time or dial-in the per fect amount of reverb on the lead vocal. One-stop navigation and editing In fact, just as easy as your effects pedals. Hold down the TAP button and press the up or down button to alter the effects parameter, for example on patch (9) Plate, this would adjust the decay length. The ZED FX is designed to fulfil all the functions a small band would need
without their own sound engineer. The layout and features have been arranged to be logical and instantly recognisable at a dark gig- a mixer you can trust to per form.

The USB audio interface, with its uniquely flexible capability, allows different signals to be sent to USB, from LR or from selected aux buses. The USB return signal can be routed straight to the LR mix or to a stereo channel. The connectors are placed on the top surface for easy plugging & patching, and the construction, with individual circuit boards firmly nutted to the top panel, is as rock solid as Allen & Heaths top of the range ML Series mixers.

The ZED FX range currently comprises of the ZED-12FX and the 22FX. Between them they offer a solution for any small group or singer songwriter needing up to 16 mono inputs and 3 stereo inputs. Keyboards, microphones, samplers, the sky is the limit. Each mono channel has an insert point, allowing in-line effects such as compressors to be added to the signal chain, just like our large format mixers.

Features

Internal FX

16 separate effects have been crafted into the ZED-FX range. These include Delay and Reverb, Ping-Pong delay, a selection of reverbs with different room/hall/arena properties, a flanger and a chorus. All have been designed to complement the material the engineer is working with. Each of the effects has a parameter which can be altered: pre-delay can be adjusted, room sizes tweaked, and flanger speed dialled-in. Five of the effects can have their tempo tapped in, and the output auditioned by the FX PFL.

Inputs
One of the great things about the ZED series is the number and variety of things you can plug in. In addition to the six mono channels there are three dual stereo channels, each with a main stereo input on jack sockets, and with the ability to take additional stereo inputs from phono sockets or from the USB audio input, flexibility gives you control. 6 mic/line channels are provided on ZED-12FX - plenty for mics or DI boxes for a small band, duo or solo performer 4 stereo line inputs - dual inputs, both with gain and 2-band EQ

Based on the proven pre-amps from the hugely successful PA series, the ZED series has new DuoPreTM pre-amps, which use a two stage design, with carefully controlled amounts of gain in each stage.

ZED-FX features a musical 3-band EQ derived from the acclaimed GL2400 mixer.
The design utilizes MusiQ - optimized slope (or Q factor) for equalizing individual instruments.

Build
The ZED-12FX has been designed using individual vertically mounted circuit boards with each rotary control fixed with a metal nut to the front panel - making a much more robust product that will resist damage and give years of reliable use. ZED also has professional 100mm faders for ultimate control over your levels.

We have teamed up with Cakewalk to bundle SONAR LE with this ZED mixer. The two team up together in many ways - for example straightforward recording of a stereo mix, recording tracks individually to build up a song, or for inserting a SONAR LE effects plug-in.

Allen & Heath Zed22FX USB Mixer with Effects Price: $799.00

In addition to the sixteen mono channels there are two dual stereo channels, each with a main stereo input on jack sockets and with additional inputs on phono sockets. the USB return can be selected to one of the additional inputs so that it feeds either the main LR bus or the stereo channel.

DuoPreTM
Based on the proven pre-amps from the hugely successful PA series, the ZED series has new DuoPreTM pre-amps, which use a two stage design, with carefully controlled amounts of gain in each stage.

EQ section
ZED-420 features a responsive 4-band EQ taken from the acclaimed GL2400 mixer. The design utilizes MusiQ - optimized slope (or Q factor) for equalizing individual instruments.

Auxiliary sends
6 aux sends are provided, of which 1&2 are prefade for foldback monitoring, and 3 & 4 are switched pre or post-fade for effects sends. and 5&6 are post-fade. Auxes 1&2 can be sent to the USB bus for recording pre-fade signals independently to the main mix. Auxes 5&6 can also be sent to the USB bus for use as effects sends.

USB
audio flexibility Getting audio to and from a computer easily is now a common requirement for live sound and music production.

Build
The ZED-420 has been designed using individual vertically mounted circuit boards with each rotary control fixed with a metal nut to the front panel - making a much more robust product that will resist damage and give years of reliable use. ZED also has professional 100mm faders for ultimate control over your levels.

Augmenting the already highly successful GB4 console range is the new GB8 8-bus console. The GB4 has found many friends including the Cavern Club in Liverpool, and in use at the Bedford venue in South London.

Available in frame sizes from 16 to 48 channels, each with four full-function stereo channels and four stereo returns, the GB8 is designed for installations such as churches and performance venues, or for small touring sound systems. The dual-mode topology implemented to such success on the MH3 and MH4 desks allows the GB8 to be used on FOH or monitor duties, with fader control of group or aux outputs. Additional features over the GB4 include a 1kHz oscillator and a meter bridge with three led meters that very closely emulate the ballistics of VU meters.

Four mute groups allow several channels to be muted simultaneously, while another unique facility is the limiter on both the Record and Alternate stereo outputs that makes it easier to create a stereo recording of the mix.

The console also features an output matrix with eleven feeds to four outputs, being fed from the group busses and main L, R and C (mono) outputs.

Although largely conventional in layout, the GB8 does have some unique mechanical features. The rugged steel chassis has a sloping rear connector panel so that it is easier to configure from the front of the desk, while the integral power supply has a link option for an external back-up PSU.

Both the GB4 and GB8 desks carry the high quality hallmark with which Soundcraft is synonymous, with engineering and design, as you’d expect from this high-end manufacturer. Careful attention has been given to the mechanical construction, to ensure reliability under strenuous conditions, with all input modules being constructed with individual vertically-mounted pcb’s, fitted to the steel chassis front panel with individually-nutted potentiometers.

The GB Series also shares the stylish looks of the MH4, MH3 and LX7ii consoles, continuing a strong family look and feel across the range.

EQ Section
GB4 and GB8 incorporate the GB30 4-band equaliser section - based on that used in the high-end MH Series. Both the HF and LF shelving sections have steeper slopes than usual which substantially reduces mid frequency harshness in the HF band and muddiness in the LF. This increase in “cleanliness” of response is further enhanced by an element of undershoot and overshoot in the boost/cut response. It has two swept mid frequencies carefully selected for optimum control during live performances. All bands provide 15dB of cut or boost. The Low frequency equaliser response shelves at 80Hz. The swept Lo Mid control operates between 80Hz and 1.9kHz. The swept Hi Mid control operates at frequencies between 550Hz and 13kHz. The fixed High frequency equaliser response shelves at 13kHz.

EQ Switch
The EQ section can be bypassed using the EQ switch, allowing comparison of treated and untreated sounds without having to reset controls.

Auxiliary Sends
The GB4 has 8 flexible Auxiliary sends which allow the choice of either monitor or effects orientated mixes. Auxes 1-4 are pre-fader and, in normal operation, are routed to the rotary Aux masters 1-4. In SWAP mode, they are routed to Group faders 1-4 and Group meters 1-4, ideal for monitor mixing applications. Auxes 5 to 8 are pre/post switchable - globally assigned selectable per Aux bus from the Master Section. The GB8’s 8 Auxiliary sends (Fig. 1) are globally selectable per Aux bus between pre/post fade. The Auxes are routed to rotary Aux masters, which all feature SWAP mode.

Level Control and Routing
On the GB4, the signal on each fader can be routed to the L-R mix (via the Pan control), the C (mono) bus and Groups 1&2 and 3&4. On the GB8, the signal can additionally be routed to Groups 5&6 and 7&8

Pan
Turning the pan control full left or right enables odd or even groups or the left or right Mix bus to be accessed individually.

Solo/PFL
Each channel can be soloed pre-fader, post-EQ to check levels. PFL status is indicated via a front panel LED.

100mm Fader
Professional grade, 100mm faders provide accurate, consistent control of audio levels and have superb cut-off performance.

Metering
A 4-segment LED display on each fader strip provides an instant reference for the signal level on that channel.

STEREO INPUT MODULE
