KORG PA1X Details top

CD burner installation requires Operating System Upgrade

The all-new Pa1X breaks new ground and opens up new territory for the composer, performer and entertainer who demand a musical companion second to none.

Just take a look…
The first thing you’ll notice is the huge 240 x 320 full color TouchView display, taking Korg’s intuitive access of multiple parameters to new heights. Next, the sleek aluminum panel and 61-key synth action (with aftertouch) will catch your eye. Eight assignable sliders, four assignable switches, a joystick and two fixed function faders are all designed to put the amazing power of the Pa1X at your fingertips. There is even an option for a hard drive that can store all your sound, song, sample and performance data for easy recall.

It all begins with sound
The Pa1X is the first Korg product based on our new RX Technology, using up to five oscillators to produce a detailed, sophisticated natural sound. Unparalleled levels of expression are supported by new sample data including natural vibratos, real trombone slides, tongued and overblown flutes, guitar pull-offs and harmonics, and so much more. We even found room to include our DSP modeled organ, and you can use the assignable sliders as realtime drawbars for amazing realism. All of the data from the “Real Drums” and “Turkish/Arabic World” Pa80 cards comes preloaded on the internal hard drive.

The Pa1X delivers a generous 62 note polyphony and 828 Sounds, plus another 256 you can program yourself. Add to that 48 preset drum kits and 64 programmable drum kits! Sweeten the sound using the four stereo Master Effects (featuring 90 effect types), plus a set of Vocal Effects borrowed from the legendary TC-Helicon.

The Pa1X is also an accomplished sampler, able to read .WAV, AIFF, Korg and AKAI samples/ multisamples. Sampled sounds can be sliced to create new grooves and kits, assigned to Sounds, or filtered, modified and processed by the internal effects. Standard sample memory is 16MB, expandable to 32 MB.

Deeply defined musical Styles
The Pa1X is packed with 450 fully editable musical styles, created by a team of the world’s top musicians to enhance your compositions and performances – with room for over 150 more! Each Style contains eight accompaniment parts – use one or two to add drums and bass, or use all eight to throw a full big-band behind your sound. Authentic picking patterns teamed with our new RX guitar sounds bring even simple Styles to life. Four variations, three intros, two endings, three fills, a break and a count-in further enrich each Style. The Pa1X scans your playing to keep the accompaniment in key with your playing, recognizing a multitude of chord variations. New styles can be loaded in or played directly via the floppy drive.

Up to four Sounds can be split and stacked across the keyboard and played in real time – either by themselves or with a Style. The four STS (Single Touch Setting) commands call up an entirely new set of sounds for your real time performance parts, appropriate for the current Style.

Taking Requests?
Using the exclusive SongBook function, you can select a song from the vast user-defined database and instantly call up the correct sounds, style, tempo, key, effects – every setting needed to play that song! A single Performance setting – 320 are available – can save and recall a Style, STS settings, and also memorize transposition, scale type (Arabic, Stretch, Werckmeister, etc…) tempo and control assignments with a single command.

Creative sequencing scenarios
The sequencers on the Pa1X outperform those of other products. And yes – we did mean plural. The Pa1X uses our XDS Dual Sequencer, so one can load as the other plays, and a DJ style cross fader can blend between them. You can actually sync both sequencers together as you play to provide an astounding 40-part arrangement!

The Backing Sequencer is designed to let you capture all of the Style’s accompaniment tracks in one pass, greatly speeding up the song creation process. You can even type in the chord changes, fills and style changes in step time – a big boost for arrangers and non-keyboardists! Of course the sequencer also offers 16 track linear “workstation style” sequencing. Best of all, you can get started with the Backing Sequencer and then switch modes, allowing you to erase, re-write or layer on more tracks to personalize your performance. The sequencer is compatible with SMF and Karaoke files, and provides massive editing power – you can even edit the tone parameters of a sound assigned to a track.

Flexible connectivity
The Pa1X comes equipped with two pairs of audio outputs plus two pairs of MIDI Ins & Outs. You’ll also find two audio inputs, one of which can be switched to a balanced MIC input with separate gain control. As a central piece of your growing digital studio, the Pa1X also sports a coaxial S/P DIF output. The back panel offers a damper pedal input, an assignable pedal input, and a connection to the optional EC5 pedalboard with five assignable footswitches. Finally, a USB port allows you to easily move data back and forth between a personal computer and the optional hard drive.

Help is always at hand.
Literally. The “HELP” key can be pressed in any mode, and will display useful information related to the current mode and operation. This valuable reference guide can never be lost or misplaced!

Powerful Options
Adding an MP3 encoder/ player will allow you to record your entire performance – vocals and all – and play it back or save it for later. You can load MP3 files to play during a break, or even play along. Install the optional CD-R drive, and you’ll be able to play audio CDs as well as load in new sounds styles and .WAV/AIFF/KORG/AKAI samples. Embedded SMF lyrics appear in the TouchView display, or can be sent to a video monitor using the Video Interface kit. The TC-Helicon Voice Processor can be upgraded from voice doubling and 4-part harmonies to include state-of-the-Art Pitch Correction and Voice Modeling!

Self-contained Pa1X puts it all together
The Pa1X offers all of these great features and can also accommodate an internal hard drive as an option. In addition, the Pa1X houses a rich bi-amped sound system featuring two 13cm deep bass speakers, each one powered by its own 35-watt amplifier. Two additional 12-watt amps provide power and clarity for two soft dome tweeters. The specially designed enclosure, limiter and custom EQ ensure the highest quality sound.

The new Pa1X is the most complete tool for the musical professional ever conceived. Intuitive, powerful, interactive with the most stunning sound you will hear from an Arranger keyboard.

History
Korg's history in Acc (Arranger) keyboards started with legendary i3, a landmark in musical instruments, and then passed through many generations of successful arrangers until the most successful professional Arranger keyboard ever – the Pa80.
But we are musicians ourselves and knew we could do even better, so we aimed for the most powerful and easy to use musical arranger we could imagine. For this we used RX Technology. It underlies every sound, every function and every feature of the Pa1X. The result is a masterpiece. So please: Listen and believe.

RX Technology

RX Technology lead us to look for the best vocal sound and processing possible. We know that an audience wants to hear a great voice to go with great music.

TC Helicon inside

Looking for the best, we forged links with another world class audio technology company, TC Electronic, to combine our audio vision with successful vocal technologies already used in the musical and sound recording worlds.
The Pa1X includes as standard the world acclaimed TC Helicon Voice Processor featuring EQ and professional quality effects (reverb, chorus, etc.), designed and shaped specifically for vocals. These effects, combined with a dedicated high quality mic preamp, ensure your vocals have the highest sound quality possible. The TC Helicon Voice Processor also features voice doubling and 4 voice harmonizer. Simply connect your microphone and start to play: along with the fantastic Korg sounds you have also the world’s most respected and recognised processing for your voice – the TC Helicon Voice Processor. For more power and specific applications, you can add upgrade options to the TC Helicon Voice Processor. These are Pitch Correction and Voice Modeling as upgrade options. SUG-TC1:
TC Helicon Pitch Correction and Voice Modeling (supported from O.S.1.5) download here to make this feature operable

Easy to use

With all the technological power packed inside, it was vital that we also made the Pa1X easy to understand and easy to use. But even more, we wanted the whole way you use the Pa1X to be an intuitive, musical, fast, foolproof experience.
Our new graphical user interface uses an amazing new Graphical Colour Touch Screen to help you work in a faster, easier, logical and intuitive way. The most respected professional synthesisers in the world – the Korg Trinity and Triton – pioneered the use of TouchScreen technology. Naturally, we based our new user interface on the feedback from some of the most successful musicians in the world and provide an advanced Graphical Colour Touch Screen.
All the power of the new Pa1X can be controlled with just one finger. Think, Point, Touch – RX Technology at work.
The controls are laid out sensibly, there is no need to search for what you need.
Switches and sliders are assignable so your live performances work the way you want them to. For one song, the sliders can be organ drawbars, for another volume controls for each part of a backing style. Nothing stands between you and your professional performance.
Trying to make something work? Check out the multilingual contextual Help System that is standard on board! More RX Technology at your service.

Sounds quality
The amazing sound quality of the Pa1X simply has to be heard to be believed. We want you and your audience to feel like there is a real band on stage – we want the experience to be real, for you and your audience to believe – another focus of RX Technology. So we redesigned what was already the most powerful synth sound engine available to give you a rich, detailed, sophisticated natural sound. The Pa1X gives you musical instruments from almost every genre exploding with depth, nuance, subtlety, accuracy and richness.
We’ve recorded all new multi level samples of the instruments you know and use:

Drums (acoustic and electronic)
Basses (acoustic and electric)
Guitars (acoustic and electric)
Accordions
Organs (rotary and church)
Sax (tenor, alto, and soprano)
Trombone and Flugelhorn
Brass
Electric Piano
Synth
With more realism than anything you've played before you will discover new horizons in playing and experiencing music. And a broad range too. The Pa1X ROM has 760 ROM sounds, including a stereo acoustic piano, plus an extra 48 drum kits. In addition, the RAM area may contain up to 256 sounds and 64 drum kits. This is an amazing number of high quality instruments and covers almost every musical need. Of course, there is full on board sound editing!

New Sounds Through Sound Expansion
Not enough sounds? We doubt it but if you want to add more, the Pa1X has two slots available for the addition of optional user installable16Mb Korg sound upgrade boards. These can provide up to 512 extra sounds and 128 extra drum kits.

Sampling
Still not enough sounds? In the real professional world you work in, you may need to add even more of your own custom sounds. The Sampling section (fully functional only with an-optional-hard disk installed) in a fully developed feature to satisfy almost any professional need. You can create (record) up to 32 Mb of your own samples and multisamples (with optional added SIMM chips). Or you can load Wave, AIFF, Korg format files and of course the incredible Akai sample library – about the largest sample library available.
The Pa1X also features professional editing facilities such as loop, cut, normalize and cropping of samples. A special "Time Slice" feature allows you to slice audio grooves and import the audio data into a Style for the coolest rhythms available.

Effects
But great sound doesn’t stop there. Korg’s professional synthesizer range has earned a reputation over many years for outstanding on board studio quality effects covering every need: reverb, delay, chorus, etc. The Pa1X has 4 Stereo Master Effects processors with an incredible 90 effects (including a fantastic Vocoder) to choose from.

Styles
Matching the highest sound quality is a new set of deluxe styles, programmed by some of the leading Arrangers in the world. We employed different style writers according to their various musical strengths. The result is hundreds and hundreds of preloaded Styles that provide unparalleled realism and richness. And now covering an expanded range of musical genres, the Pa1X gives you styles for every important performance. Record and edit your own styles on board the Pa1X as well if you require a special Style Collection!
The Pa1X also has new Fill 3/Break and Intro 3/Count In Style Elements to add realism to your performance.
More styles? The future is very exciting with many new styles to be produced by both Korg and also independent 3rd party companies. Check www.korgpa.com for more details on the all the new styles to come!

Powerful Technology
Korg’s Pa80 introduced the world’s first Arranger keyboard with two separate MIDIfile players, now you can also use these two players for playing your audio CD (with optional CDRW-1) or MP3 files (with optional MP3 player) just using the same sequencer controls. The Pa1X is a unique audio control unit. No need for external DAT, Minidisk, MP3 or CD players - they can be all included!
And with the MP3 option, you can even record your entire performance (vocals and Pa1X sounds), encode it as an MP3 file and save it to the built in hard disk and then via the USB connector to your computer!

Sequencer & Backing Sequence
Along with a powerful and fully programmable multi track sequencer, you can use Backing Sequences to create songs based over styles – quickly and easily. You don’t need to be a master programmer to be able to write your own song in minutes. This approach to quick programming is also useful for use in a studios where you want to create music for films, video, multimedia or internet applications.

SongBook
This exciting new feature was developed to make your life easier while playing live. The SongBook is a Musical Database, completely user programmable, containing all the settings needed to play a particular song. You have only to search the title of the song you would like to play, select it and hit "Play". The SongBook can use styles, Midifiles or MP3 files (with the MP3 option) and immediately recall settings such as Song Title, Genre, Artist, Tempo, Volumes, Sounds, Muted Tracks, FX settings, Easy Edit, 4 STS*, Master Transpose and more.
Everything you need to perfectly play your song is in the SongBook unique to the Pa1X - the only Arranger keyboard available with this amount of sophisticated controls.

*STS - Single Touch Settings is a memory that recalls sounds for all the real time tracks (upper1, 2, 3 & lower + pads).

Configurable

You can configure and edit almost anything in the Pa1X. Styles, Performances and Programs can all be fully modified and saved. Settings for Sliders, Switches, Pads, Global (Midi channels, output routings, etc.) can also be modified and saved. Scales are fully programmable and include quarter tone settings and a programmable Arabic Scale. If you are playing an organ sound, you will enjoy using the Sliders as Drawbars.

With all of this control, the Pa1X functions as a superb MIDI controller (Master Keyboard).

Connectivity
Naturally, the Pa1X has all the connectivity you need including 4 separate audio outs, 2 line ins, 1 balanced XLR input for microphone, a USB (Slave) connection and a digital S/PDIF coaxial output with better than CD quality output.

Compatibility
Even though the Pa1X is all new, it is also compatible with the old i-series style format and with all files of Pa60 and Pa80 products. And all your Pa50, Pa60 & Pa80 sound programs work in the Pa1X as well. Keep your favourite sounds and styles while benefiting from a cutting edge keyboard.
The Pa1X also supports the main musical formats like SMF (Standard Midi File), Karaoke files, CD-Audio (with optional CDRW-1), MP3 files (with optional MP3 board), GM and GM2 (General Midi). Of course, the Pa1X is able to show lyrics in the most popular karaoke formats. With the optional VIF3 video interface (available in PAL or NTSC standard formats) you can display lyrics on an external TV monitor.

USB
A USB connection (Slave) allows you to connect your Pa1X to a computer (Mac OS 9 and X, Win 98, 2000, XP). It’s never been easier to organize, edit, process, copy or create back-ups of your music.

KORG PA1X How to Choose top

Understanding Electronic Keyboards

  • Why a Portable/Electronic/Arranger keyboard vs. a Pro keyboard (WorkStation)- how are these different?

Pro keyboards (also called synthesizers or workstations) can have up to 88 keys and some offer realistic piano action and excellent piano sound. They also will feature a multitude of other features that you may not need including audio recording, editing the sound to the most elemental part of the sound, a 16+ track sequencer with detailed editing, a lot of synth sounds. They will run 4 to 18 simultaneous higher quality effects like reverb, but many will have no built in arranging capability or musical styles other than arpeggiators and drum patterns. Some workstations do offer a small menu of preconstructed patterns usually require the player to construct each part (track)individually. This is a good feature for composers, but requires a ground up approach to composition. Because of the depth of features, workstations can be intimidating for a first time user. Portable/arranger type keyboards are generally easier to use and are an excellent means for much quicker songwriting ; also great for use as a "one person band".

  • What affects the price you will pay and what should you look for?
    • The level of realism, quality and number of sounds- are they extremely realistic or a close approximation ?
    • Start with the grand piano sound, then strings. These are the most difficult to emulate
    • Arranging- Song Styles (how many and quality) and Song Sections (how many) and musical parts (how many)?
    • Does it sound like it was designed by a world class musician?
    • Display size- bigger the better to view info, makes it considerably easier to use
    • Score display- does it also have Lyrics/Text display?
    • Number of simultaneous effects, number of different effects?
    • Vocal Harmonizer- adds harmony backup vocal to your voice through a mic input
    • Polyphony- the number of notes that will play simultaneously IMPORTANT !!
    • How can you backup your tracks/compositions? Hard drive, CD burner, audio recording-
    • Will it sync with non audio tracks?
    • Does it have USB to device for optional jump drive or floppy drive for storage, USB to computer for saving sequences and styles
    • Does it have a Video output? This is very useful for lyrics display
    • Multiple audio outputs ?- more is better in order to separate different sounds sent to a mixer or computer for mixes
    • External controls- total number, logical control panel layout -- touch screen? Complexity might mean more menu flipping,
    • Music Search- how easy is it to find the style of music you need quickly?
    • Ease of Use- how quickly can you assemble a new song, find a patch to play, tweak a sound, chain patterns together?
    • Recording or Sequencing features? Most feature built in multiple ( at least 16) track recording sequencers with detailed editing and standard midi file
    • Playback- how many tracks does it have, how detailed is the editing?
    • Are optional sounds available? Third party sounds/samples? How can you store these? RAM memory? RAM is volatile so you will need a backup like a jump drive or memory card to do this.
    • Will you need a Computer editor/librarian software package? They can offer great visuals and are usually much, much easier to use.
    • Saving sound edits, song edits, style edits, sliders, switches, Easy to use?
  • What about speakers? Do I need an amp

Almost all portables have built-in speakers except a few very high end stage models are designed for performers and will require a keyboard amp or other external amplification. Most onboard speakers are generally loud enough for home listening or monitoring yourself. All have headphone jacks if you prefer not to be heard. Keyboard amplifiers or portable powered speakers are on the site if you have play in a big venue or with other louder instruments, choirs, or just want more bottom end bass frequencies, . . .

  • How good do these sound
Please notice that almost every portable on our site has a sound file you can play on your computer to hear for yourself
  • What accessories should I consider?
    • Keyboard amps/powered speaker systems- if you play on stage for bigger venues
    • Headphones and home stereo speakers can suffice if you play at home only
    • Microphones may be plugged into some models. You may also need a microphone stand
    • Keyboard Stands come in many shapes and styles- X style, Z style,
    • Bench- consider a more sturdy 4 leg bench if you do not need portability, X style if you do, the wider the better
    • Headphones- full size will be more comfortable and quieter and may offer better quality audio
    • Pedals- most come with a sustain pedal, some have jacks for more control- volume, expression, etc
    • Bag or case- for portable models, we recommend the manufacturer bags and cases first, then Gator Cases
    • Dust cover
  • Comparison Chart

Glossary

  • What is MIDI
an interface to connect a keyboard to the computer like USB port for printers. It sends note and other data from the keyboard to the computer or vice versa. Basically says play this note at this time at this volume level- it is not an actual audio recording. It also makes it possible for one keyboard to play another keyboard.
  • What is polyphony?
the number of simultaneous notes that can be played, though if it’s a stereo sample/recording each note can use 2 notes at once. Its important for anyone who plays a lot of notes at the same time and holds down the sustain pedal. The earliest notes played will cut out when the limit is exceeded. This can happen with pianos with 32 note polyphony especially.
  • What are those pedals for?
a sustain pedal to hold all notes played as lomg as the pedal is held down. The soft/half pedaling pedal plays one of 3 strings only for each note (softer sound) and sostenuto (select only certain notes to sustain).
  • What is a sequencer?
a recorder with 1 to 16 tracks usually so that multiple instruments can be played back for fully orchestrated songs and can have elaborate editing capability. Typically digital pianos have only 1 or 2 tracks for playing back a piano performance and archiving another. These can be downloaded to the computer with a midi interface
  • What is sampling/samples?
a short audio recording of a note. For more realistic sound, digital pianos can be recorded at different velocities so that when you strike a note harder, the timbre changes for better realism
  • What are effects?
to modify and enhance the sounds in the keyboard including non- piano sounds. e.g. - reverb will put the piano in a small room or up to a large concert hall.
