Bill Putnam Sr. who was an extremely successful recording engineer originally founded Universal Audio in the 1960s. From the early fifties through the 1980s, Putnam worked with a who's who roster of acts including Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole. He founded Universal Recording in Chicago and began designing and building his own recording equipment, as he was dissatisfied with what was commercially available at the time. After moving to Los Angeles to open United Recording, which is still in operation under new owners as Oceanway Recording and Cello Studios, he founded Universal Audio and began selling some of his creations, including the 1176 Limiting Amplifier, commercially. When Bill Sr. passed away in 1989 his sons, Jim and Bill Putnam Jr. discovered
original schematic diagrams for Universal Audio products, including the 1176LN,
