The Roland
SPD20 is a compact rhythm powerhouse. There are 700 percussion sounds onboard,
triggered by 8 highly sensitive drum pads and up to 4 external drum triggers.
Drummers who want to add a flexible pad-and-sound-module combination to their
existing drum kit will be blown away by the SPD20. Electronic musicians who
want a more organic way to create MIDI sequences will love it. In fact, the
SPD20 is so straightforward to operate, that musicians of all levels (and MIDI
know-how) will be jamming within seconds. If you need professional sounds and
triggers but don't want to move into a full-blown digital kit like Roland's
V-Drums, the SPD20 is the perfect option. So, let's dig in, shall we?
The SPD20 has 4 times the waveform memory of its famed predecessor, the SPD11.
This kind of huge memory is necessary because not only are there tons of
soundsÖthey are also present in superb audio resolution. The collection
includes pristine acoustic drumsÖjazz, old school, funk, rock, pop, Latin, and
orchestral sets. Phat electronic sounds are in abundanceÖincluding, of course,
Roland's TB808 and 909. And there's a breathtaking new collection of World
percussion from India, Africa, Asia, Australia, South America, and the Middle
East. There's even a set of drum rolls and rhythm loops you can use to
devastating effect in sequences or your live show! Mix and match sounds and
save them to 99 custom user patches.
Even if you're new to electronic percussion you won't have much trouble editing
the sounds to your exact taste. The straightforward, intuitive editing commands
make it easy to change parameters like Level, Pitch, Reverb Decay, Pan,
Velocity Curve, and Effects like Chorus, Delay, and Flange. You can also layer
a couple of different sounds on a pad and assign them to trigger at different
velocitiesÖnow you're playing dynamics will switch the sound from a rim shot to
a full snare hit, ride to bell, etc.! The SPD20's pads respond realistically
and naturally to common drumming techniques like rolls and flams, giving you
quick response and a very low striking noise (which is great for plugging in
some headphones and practicing all night).
There are 4 drum trigger inputs on the SPD20, making possible to use other pads
or trigger sounds straight off of your acoustic kit. The optional FD7 Hi-Hat
Control Pedal can be connected to the SPD20 to trigger open and closed hi-hat
sounds and everything in between. And with the KD7 Kick Trigger, you can use
your favorite kick pedal as a trigger.The lines between your acoustic kit and
your electronic kit will start to blur as you utilize the new range of sounds
and expressiveness you've got. You can also hook up the SPD20 to MIDI
sequencers and samplers.
