NOVATION REMOTE25 Details
Novation haven't just re-written the book with the ReMOTE controller - we've ripped it up and started again. We've made it truly portable, being mains or battery powered, we've given it one of the best semi-weighted keyboard actions around, we've engineered a programmable pitch/mod/control wheel which is a delight to use, we've integrated a cool ‘touchpad' for wild performance effects and we've included dozens of pre-programmed templates for the most popular software plug-ins and traditional hardware instruments so you can use it straight out of the box. ReMOTE - nothing can match this cute little tool for features, usability and value.
A SEMI-WEIGHTED KEYBOARD ACTION WITH AFTERTOUCH
At the heart of the ReMOTE is a superb action, semi-weighted keyboard with aftertouch. Unlike many controllers, you can play your favourite software synth or sampler with the care and precise control that can make a huge difference to the final performance.
HANDS ON RESPONSIVE CONTROL FOR EVERY APPLICATION
The ergonomically designed front panel is inviting and simple to use. And it's all there - 8 rotary potentiometers, 8 sliders, 8 rotary encoders and 24 switches that are entirely programmable. All controls can be named and memorised as a collection with a group template name, then saved in any one of the 64 template memories.
USE-ANYWHERE PORTABILITY AND RECHARGEABLE POWER
ReMOTE may be powered by six C-size alkaline/rechargeable batteries or external mains PSU. When connected to a computer via USB, rechargeable batteries are charged without the need of a mains re-charger.
COLOUR-CODED IDENT STRIPS
With most controllers which feature ‘soft controls' you never know which knob or which button controls which function. Not so with ReMOTE as it ships with loads of handy coloured control ident strips which, when used with the pre-programmed templates makes for easy and intuitive control of the software application / plug-in. Additional strips are also in the box for you to customise to your own templates.
MASSIVE SET OF 64 TEMPLATE MEMORIES WITH OVER 60 PARAMETERS
To get up and running fast, the ReMOTE is shipped with over 50 user pre-programmed templates to control many popular hardware and software instruments. In addition you can create and save your own templates by combining any data from any preset.
X/Y TOUCHPAD FOR TOTAL EXPRESSION
Indicative of Novation's forward thinking design is the touchpad. Being fully assignable and programmable in both X (side-to-side) and Y (up-and-down) directions, stunning and unique performance effects are just a finger-glide away. Imagine setting a distortion amount and a pan position on the left to right movement and an LFO speed and filter cut-off on the top to bottom movement - total expressive and creative control.
DEDICATED TRANSPORT CONTROLS AND FAST TEMPLATE FUNCTION BUTTONS
Total control over your sequencer's transport and locate functions are yours via the dedicated transport and four function button controls. Select a new template, scroll through templates, send snapshots, transmit a panic command, etc. this kind of instant flexibility will streamline your working practice.
BUILT IN USB / MIDI INTERFACE
Now shipped with both Windows and Mac OSX USB MIDI drivers, just plug into the USB port, install the driver software and the ReMOTE is fully operational. Alternatively if your computer system does not have USB then simply plug into the MIDI ports. The ReMOTE provides two MIDI Out ports, one MIDI thru port and one MIDI In port. Information originating from the ReMOTE keyboard or its controls can be sent directly to the USB port and/or any of the MIDI out ports. The MIDI ports can be used to integrate the rest of your MIDI gear into your computer system.

3) Are there any more templates to download?
More templates for the ReMOTE will be available for download here in the near future.
4) Can the ReMOTE be used with a Mac?
The ReMOTE is currently shipped with a driver CD for Windows 98SE, Windows 98Me, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Mac OSX 10.2 or greater. These are all USB MIDI drivers. There is no Mac OS9 ReMOTE USB MIDI driver but the ReMOTE can be used by connecting the conventional MIDI ports on the ReMOTE to an existing MIDI interface connected to the OS9 Mac. The OSX driver for the ReMOTE will work with both Jaguar and Panther operating systems.
5) How is the ReMOTE powered?
The ReMOTE can be powered from USB, from batteries or from an optional 9V DC power supply. If rechargable batteries are fitted into the ReMOTE, these can be recharged by the ReMOTE either by the USB power supply or by connecting to the optional 9V DC power supply.
6) The unit crashes/freezes up or just does strange things after a short period of time.
The latest operating system for the ReMOTE is version 2.2.08. To find out the version of operating system installed in a ReMOTE hold down the F4 button next to the top C key and turn the ReMOTE on. The installed OS will be displayed on screen for a brief period of time. The OS files and a Windows utility can be downloaded from the Downloads page of the website. If the ReMOTE is being used with a USB hub it will be necessary to power the USB hub so that enough current can be supplied the ReMOTE. If the ReMOTE is used with an unpowered USB hub this may cause improper operation of the ReMOTE and/or the computer the ReMOTE is connected to.
7) What is the latest Windows driver version for the ReMOTE?
The latest driver for Windows 98ME, 2000 and XP driver for the ReMOTE is version 2.0.1.4. The latest driver version for Windows 98SE is 1.1.0.4. This can be checked by connecting the ReMOTE via USB to a computer, turning on and then checking the properties of the control panel sytem/device manager/sound, video and games controllers ReMOTE icon. The latest OSX driver version for the ReMOTE is 1.1. The latest drivers can be downloaded from the Downloads page of the website.
8) How can the ReMOTE be reinitialised?
The ReMOTE needs to be reloaded with the original template data. It is not possible to restore this from the unit directly. Use the template editor to do this - see the Downloads page.
9) When used with Cubase SE, SX or SX2 any VSTi instruments can be played perfectly well in real time but playing back a recording made with the ReMOTE results in notes playing out of time.
This is related to the way that the ReMOTE has been assigned within the Cubase Device Setup when the generic surface file found on the ReMOTE driver and resource CD has been imported.
10) Can the ReMOTE transport buttons be used with Reason?
Reason has a fixed MIDI implementation for most functions but the transport bar and the mixer controls do not have fixed MIDI functions. The controls for transport and mixer functions need to be 'learnt' into Reason in order for these to work. See the Tips & Tricks section in the User Area for instructions.
11) What type of footswitch can be used with the ReMOTE?
The footswitch control is specified within each template for the ReMOTE and can be assigned to any MIDI function. Either a normally open or a normally closed footswitch can be used with the ReMOTE. To set the footswitch to control sustain within a particular template, press the template edit mode button. Press the footswitch to make this the control active for editing. Set the control type to CC, the CC number to 064 (MIDI sustain), and the button type to toggle. For a normally open footswitch, set the high value to 127 and the low value to 000. For a normally closed footswitch, set the high value to 000 and the low value to 127. Write the template to memory to save the changes.
12) Assigning both the MIDI input and MIDI output of the ReMOTE to a track within Steinberg Cubase results in incorrect recording of MIDI data / using Rewire with Steinberg Cubase results in incorrect recording of MIDI data.
If this occurs, an attempted recording results in all note data being entered at the first beat of the first bar of the recording. This has been corrected in the latest MIDI driver 2.0.1.4.
13) Connecting some makes of MIDI keyboard to the ReMOTE MIDI input results in missing or stuck notes.
Some makes of MIDI keyboards use a communication protocol called running status. The running status handling of the ReMOTE has been significantly improved with the latest windows driver 2.0.1.4.
