NORD NC1 Details top

The Nord C1 Combo Organ is here!
Yes, the wait is finally over - Clavia introduces the Nord C1 Combo Organ, the first professional dual manual combo organ that is truly portable. Somebody once said "less is more" - in this case, it only applies to the weight. At just 33 pounds, the C1 is the most player-friendly clonewheel in the world, but that's only where "less is more" applies. The C1 has the most massive sound of any digital organ made, and will have you wondering if we didn't just put a real tonewheel organ inside the chassis.

Tell your chiropractor we said we're sorry.

Some distinct organ sounds have remained popular during recent decades of pop and rock & roll music – soulful sounds that breathe and growl that can only be found in heavy, bulky vintage instruments. Apart from sourcing, restoring, and maintaining these vintage organs, their size and weight make them less than ideal for the gigging musician – especially when adding their amplifiers, stands, and other necessary gear. Even recent clonewheels come in different parts, and can weigh as much as 95 pounds. With the C1, this is no longer a problem.

Nothing quite sounds like a tonewheel or transistor organ. Each instrument’s sound was the result of complex interactions between different electromechanical components. Sample-based organs can only play back the result of these interactions, but cannot duplicate the processes involved. Without these crucial steps represented, the response and feel of actually playing the source instrument is lost.

Thus Clavia uses advanced modeling technology to achieve these interactions virtually in a real-time, duplicating these interactions. This gives the Nord C1 an accurate feel and sound, unmatched in any other digital organ available.

The dual manual Nord C1 Combo Organ comprises three types of vintage organs – carefully modeled from Classic tonewheel, Vox* Continental and Farfisa* Compact Deluxe originals. Built on Clavia's new 2nd generation organ model you have the most detailed response not only to what you hear but also to how it feels playing the instrument. Featuring our famous tube style overdrive, three types of amplifier simulations (including rotating speaker), vintage-sounding delay, reverb and 3-band EQ you'll have an massive, growling organ beast weighing in at a mere 15kg (33lb) at your disposal! Also featuring high level outputs (including 11-pin Leslie standard) and dedicated Bass Pedal Board MIDI input it is THE organ for every situation.

THREE IN ONE
Some distinct organ sounds have remained popular throughout the decades of pop and rock & roll music – soulful sounds that breathe and growl as found only in heavy, bulky vintage instruments. Apart from difficulties in sourcing, restoring, and maintaining these vintage organs, their sheer size and weight make them anything but ideal for the gigging musician – especially when you add out-board effects, amplifiers and speakers. Now Clavia brings you the very best of those classic setups in a single package. The dual manual Nord C1 Combo Organ comprises three types of vintage organs; a classic tonewheel, Vox* Continental and Farfisa* Compact Deluxe, all carefully modeled from their vintage originals. Also featuring our famous tube style overdrive, rotating speaker simulation, delay, reverb and 3-band EQ effects, the Nord C1 Combo Organ will tailor sounds for your body, mind and soul.

UNDER THE HOOD
The original mechanical tonewheel design as well as the Vox* and Farfisa* transistor designs result in diverse interactions between the different parts involved in the sound generating process. Modern sampling technology is able to play back the result of these interactions, but cannot duplicate the dynamic and random processes involved. Without these crucial steps represented, the response and feel of actually playing the instrument is inevitably lost.

The solution is a real-time, DSP-based model describing the construction and interaction between each part involved.

The Nord C1 Combo Organ offers three different organs – all carefully modeled from vintage originals – with the sonic result of each part of the tonewheel and transistor designs recreated faithfully.

DIGITAL DRAWBARS & SWITCHES
The fabulous sound aside, some areas of the original instrument’s design were up for improvement. For instance, the ability to store your favorite sounds and quickly recallthem as you play. This gets hard, as the original switches and drawbar levers physical position will not match the stored sound setting. The Nord C1 Combo Organ’s digital drawbars features LED segments that instantly light up to show the current setting. The digital drawbars are just as fast as their physical counterparts, and setting up your sound from scratch – even live – is done in no time at all.

3RD SET OF DRAWBARS
No two manual organ would be complete without the ability to play bass notes on a pedal board. The Nord C1 Combo Organ includes two additional bass register drawbars with selectable timbre from either vintage tonewheels or a synth bass. The bass can be controlled with any MIDI-enabled bass pedal board, or by splitting the lower manual.

LIVING EFFECTS
The built-in 3-band equalizer along with three types of speaker simulations and an extremely powerful overdrive offers you total tonal control of your sound. Add a feedback-delay with tap-tempo functionality, and several types of reverberation and you truly have an all-in-one effect section with stunning sound right out of the box.

ROUND AND ROUND
The rotary speaker simulation from Clavia’s award winning Nord Stage and Nord Electro series has been further improved, and now features an even more life-like experience. The Nord C1 Combo Organ’s rotary speaker simulation incorporates the acoustic variations that occur as a physical rotating speaker spreads the sound around in a room, providing the experience of truly moving the air around.

HIGH LEVEL OUTPUTS
Got volume? The Nord C1 Combo Organ has it in abundance. In addition to its standard line-level outputs the Nord C1 Combo Organ features an 11-pin Leslie* connector. This allows you to transfer the sound directly to your speaker cabinet as well as to control the rotating speed from the Nord C1 Combo Organ’s front panel. If your speaker cabinet does not feature the 11-pin Leslie* standard connector you can use the high level quarter inch audio output.

AMPLIFY AND TESTIFY
You can divide the stereo line output to separate tonewheel and transistor organ outputs, and connect them to separate amp set-ups.

SUPERIOR RESPONSE
An ultra low trigger-to-sound response time in the Nord C1 Combo Organ offers superior performance compared to any hardware and especially software products. Also, like the vintage original, the sound generation is started the very instant a key is pressed, not like conventional digital keyboard action, where the sound begins when the key hits bottom.

MORE THAN VOLUME
One type of input is often neglected, and yet it plays a vital part of your performance; the swell pedal. Without the proper response of the pedal you can easily lose focus when expression is called for. It is more than just volume control - the frequency response characteristics are also modeled. Further, a wide array of expression pedal manufacturers are supported to give you the perfect volume swell in every situation.

ON THE ROAD
Having three vintage organs in your studio is fun, but it’s even better when you can easily carry them with you to a gig. That is why it is so great that the Nord C1 Combo Organ is lightweight and truly portable. With the optional gig bag, you can carry the massive power of three vintage monster organs in one hand; weighing in at merely 15kg (33lb) you will save energy for your performance.

APPEARANCE
The Nord C1 Combo Organ is not just about smart design and gorgeous sound; it is about stage presence. Its bright red panel and red varnished birch side panels give the organ a classic style with modern sensibility.

THE NEW TONEWHEEL BEAST
Clavia has been developing DSP-based vintage organ models for a decade, and the Nord C1 Combo Organ is built on that award-winning legacy. Clavia’s new 2nd generation tonewheel organ model provides the perfect sound and playing experience. You now have the most detailed response not only to what you hear but also to how it feels playing the instrument. The Nord C1 Combo Organ moves beyond “close enough” to “dead-on” sound and feel.

GO WITH THE FLOW
The unique tonewheel generator design is the heart of the vintage sound. This is where the basic sound is created by 91 spinning discs and magnetic coils. Clavia has modeled all tone generators for a full polyphony of 147 notes. The model also includes significant artifacts like wheel crosstalk, cable leakage and coil energy robbing. Especially the energy robbing is crucial for organ playing techniques. Acting as a gentle dynamic level compression, it gives you the possibility to do slides and glides over the keyboard with a dynamic harmonic sound that is full and pleasant.

PERCEPTIONAL PERCUSSION
The Vintage Percussion’s mono-polyphonic character creates an intuitive feedback as you play, and is a defining characteristic of the classic tonewheel organ. All components involved - filter, distortion, and envelope characteristics - have been carefully and faithfully replicated.

THE PERFECT CLICK
One of the most important sound factors for a tonewheel organ is the transient of a starting note, also known as the “click”. This transient is not just a click sound added to the tone. It originates from how the mechanical busbar switches turn on all nine partials of the sound. Clavia have made a model of virtually all 1200 switches of the busbar matrix simulating how every single switch randomly bounces at the onset of a note.

THE CHORUS/VIBRATO EXPERIENCE
The Nord C1 Combo Organ’s chorus and vibrato were created in the same manner as the tonewheel models – analyzing and replicating the physical components involved in their mechanical ancestors. More than a mere simulation of these effects, the C1 Combo Organ’s chorus and vibrato are as alive as the tonewheels themselves. The rotating design of the vintage scanner has a deep impact on the organ’s sound. Matching the correct speed is easy - the life is in the characteristics of the analog circuitry scanned by the turning capacitive plates.

TRANSISTOR MANIA
The Nord C1 Combo Organ includes models of the two most popular transistor organs of the 1960s, offering you that massive savage sound created by their 12-top oscillator frequency-divider designs. This is a nosample zone; you have the same behavior and unique response as the original instruments.

The Farfisa* Compact Deluxe, considered by many to be the mother of transistor organs, involves routing matrixes and complex filter combinations that offer a tailored sound with massive energy and high-end.
The Vox* Continental’s brute design brings you a more hollow tone, but still with a very intense character.
As with the tonewheel organ, both transistor organs have their own unique, irreplaceable personalities. Combine them with any of the Nord C1 Combo Organ’s speaker simulations, add some distortion, adjust EQ and they will definitely light your fire.

NORD NC1 How to Choose top

How To Choose a Digital Piano / Useful Information

Click a question to see the answer.

  • Why a Digital piano vs. an acoustic piano?
    • Digital pianos are never out of tune.
    • Electric pianos use headphones so you won't bother anyone when playing or practicing.
    • Piano keyboards won't break your back moving them and they take up less space in your home.
    • Most Electronic Pianos include songs like a player piano and a sequencer to record your performances.
    • Digital pianos include many other instrument sounds besides pianos .
    • Electronic Piano Keyboards have become extremely realistic in sound quality in recent years.
  • Whats the difference between a stage piano and a home piano?
The stage piano is built to better withstand the rigors of the road but not necessarily to look good in a living room
  • What affects the price you will pay and what should you look for?
    • The level of realism of the piano sound
    • The number of simultaneous notes the digital piano will play (polyphony)
    • The quality of the cabinetry- is it simple and portable or a finished living room look
    • The 'feel' of the keyboard's keys- almost all digital pianos have 88 keys with graded hammer action like a real piano but they are made differently to simulate the true wood hammers of an acoustic piano.
    • The feel can be lighter or heavier from model to model and from brand to brand. It is mostly asubjective issue which is better but more expensive models will have a better feel.
  • Digital Piano Comparison Chart
  • What should I get for my child who is just starting to play piano? Do I need to spend a lot?

The Casio CDP100 and the PX120 both start at $499. Yamaha's P85 starts at $599. Where budget is the primary concern, we highly recommend any of these models for a beginning student. They all meet the two basic requirements of an instrument suitable for the study of piano -- a good sound and 88 weighted action keys.

  • How good do these digital pianos sound?
Please notice that almost every piano on our site has a sound file you can play on your computer to hear for yourself
  • Why would I want to spend $2200 on a digital piano?
More expensive digital pianos normally sound more realistic than lower priced models. The feel and responsiveness of the keys will be much closer to that of an acoustic piano as well. More professional models often feature an expanded menu of sounds that can be played .Better digital pianos also have added  features such as USB interfaces, expanded recording and playback functions, transposition, variable tunings and automated accompaniment.......you can be a virtual one person ochestra. Finally, higher priced digital pianos often have  upgraded cabinetry and speaker systems which improves both the look and the sound of the instrument.
  • What about speakers?
All home pianos and a few stage electric pianos have built-in speakers loud enough for home listening and headphone jacks if you prefer not to be heard. Keyboard amplifiers (powered studio monitors are best if for home use only) are on the site if you like a model without speakers, play with other louder instruments, choirs, or some less expensive digital pianos may not have the best frequency response you desire without more amplification.
  • What about pedals? Do I need 1 or 2 or 3?
For most of us, a sustain pedal is the most we will use. Piano teachers and those who are classically trained will prefer 3 pedals for soft/half pedaling (play one of 3 strings only for each note) and sostenuto (select only certain notes to sustain).
  • What other features do digital pianos have to consider?
    • Sequencer- a recorder to record midi notes which can have one or more tracks of instruments playing back at the same time.
    • The number of track scan be 1 or 2 with most digital pianos and up to 16 and 32 with other keyboards.
    • Auto accompaniment- drum patterns to pay along with, possibly a bass line based on what notes you left hand is playing and more in many different song genres/styles
    • Metronome- a repeating click for staying in time or rhythm
    • Music rest- for holding sheet music, sheet music stands are available if a model does not have one
    • Non-piano sounds like electric pianos, bass, strings,..- can also often can be layered with the piano sound
    • Songs to practice with, library of songs to be played back (guest pianist in your home)
    • Sliding key cover- good for protecting keys and reducing dust
  • What accessories should I consider?
    • Stand- come in many shapes and styles- X style, Z style, manufacturer end legs (most sturdy).
    • Bench- consider a more sturdy 4 leg bench if you do not need portability, X style if you do, wider the better.
    • Headphones- full size will be more comfortable and quieter.
    • Pedals- most come with a sustain pedal, some have jacks to connect more pedals for sostenuto and half pedaling.
    • Bag or case- for portable models, we recommend the manufacturer bags and cases first, then Gator Cases.
    • Midi interface- as most computers now have a USB port, look for a midi to USB interface if the piano does not have a USB port already, like the UX16.
    • Dust cover.
  • Portable/arranger and Pro keyboards- how are these different?
Pro keyboards can have 88 key hammer action and excellent piano sound but have a multitude of other features you may not need including audio recording, editing the sound to the most elemental part of the sound, a 16+ track sequencer with detailed editing, will run 4 to 18 simultaneous effects like reverb, etc. Portable/arranger type keyboards are more for fast songwriting, for backing tracks when you play or for one person band with drum patterns, bass, and other sounds with the accompaniment having different song style genres (blues, swing, rock, etc.) with different patterns for the verse, chorus, etc. of the song.

Glossary

  • What is MIDI?
an interface to connect a keyboard to the computer like USB port for printers. It sends note and other data from the keyboard to the computer or vice versa. Basically says play this note at this time at this volume level- it is not an actual audio recording. It also makes it possible for one keyboard to play another keyboard.
  • What is polyphony?
the number of simultaneous notes that can be played, though if it's a stereo sample/recording each note can use 2 notes at once. Its important for anyone who plays a lot of notes at the same time and holds down the sustain pedal. The earliest notes played will cut out when the limit is exceeded. This can happen with pianos with 32 note polyphony especially.
  • What are those pedals for?
a sustain pedal to hold all notes played as lomg as the pedal is held down. The soft/half pedaling pedal plays one of 3 strings only for each note (softer sound) and sostenuto (select only certain notes to sustain).
  • What is a sequencer?
a recorder with 1 to 16 tracks usually so that multiple instruments can be played back for fully orchestrated songs and can have elaborate editing capability. Typically digital pianos have only 1 or 2 tracks for playing back a piano performance and archiving another. These can be downloaded to the computer with a midi interface
  • What is sampling/samples?
a short audio recording of a note. For more realistic sound, digital pianos can be recorded at different velocities so that when you strike a note harder, the timbre changes for better realism
  • What are effects?
to modify and enhance the sounds in the keyboard including non- piano sounds. e.g. - reverb will put the piano in a small room or up to a large concert hall.
