Over the past year, EDIROL sold a staggering number of R-1 and R-4 recorders, making “Portable Recording” one of the most successful product categories in the company’s portfolio. Now comes a new addition to the red-hot lineup: the R-09. Building on the success of the R-1, the R-09 takes many of the most desired features — 24-bit uncompressed recording and a built-in stereo mic — and shrinks it all down into a more streamlined, stylish, and affordable package.

It’s ultra small and looks like a gadget, but make no mistake — the R-09 is a serious, top-quality professional recorder. Capture source material at a crystal-clean 24-bit resolution with your choice of 44.1 or 48kHz sample rates. You can record and play back in MP3 format as well (up to 320kbps). Once recorded, your files can be monitored through the R-09’s headphone jack and/or exported to a computer via USB.
Microphone Included
To record audio into the R-09, there’s no extra gear to buy or no cables to connect. A quality stereo microphone is built right into the unit, complete with a dedicated input control, mono/stereo selector, low-cut filter, and gain boost. Just point and record! If you wish to use an external microphone, the R-09 offers a 1/4" mic input.
Sweetening
The R-09 is more affordable than its predecessor, the R-1. One reason the R-1 carries a heavier price tag is because of its well-stocked lineup of internal effects. The R-09 isn’t devoid of effects, however. It contains the world’s most-requested/desired effect: reverb. Whether you’re listening to WAV or MP3 files, you can route the R-09’s playback through its internal reverb processor, immersing it in lush, user-controllable ambience.
More Than Music
The R-09 is perfect for capturing live music events, recitals, and rehearsals. It’s also handy as a songwriter’s sketchpad, ensuring that no moment of inspiration is lost. But the R-09 has many valuable uses outside of the music world as well. Students can use it to record lectures. Broadcasters and journalists can throw away their antiquated cassette recorders and use the R-09 for in-the-field interviews. Wherever, whenever there’s a need to capture audio, the R-09 can do it hassle-free thanks to its built-in microphone and long battery operation.
USB 2.0 Connection to Computer for Rapid File Transfer
The R-09 can connect to the outside world via USB 2.0 for importing/exporting audio files via computer very quickly. For example, a 600 MB recording at 44.1 kHz/16-bit takes only 5 minutes to transfer, only 1/12 of the time it would take to transfer the same recording from a MiniDisc or tape (cassette/DAT) recorder

R-09 System Update Version 1.20
This is the latest version of the R-09 operating system. Please refer to the "R-09UpdateReadMe.pdf" for the update procedure.
Version 1.20 adds display mode settings for optimizing battery life, a repair file function and a maximum file size function. Refer to the "R-09v120Addendum.pdf" document for more information about this update.
NOTE: The update files that you download and save to your computer from the link above are enclosed in a compressed zip file. These files will need to be extracted from the zip file before you can perform the update.
You can do this by using the WinZip application on your PC running Windows XP, or by using Stuffit Expander on your Macintosh (needed for OS 10.2.x or below). If you're using Mac OS X 10.3.x or above, then you will not need Stuffit Expander.
When you double-click on the downloaded file that you saved to your computer, WinZip or Stuffit Expander should startup automatically. If you do not have WinZip (PC) or Stuffit Expander (Mac) installed, then you must download it, install it, and extract/unzip the update files folder before you can complete the update procedure.
PROS - Sound quality - to my ears - is excellent with the built in mic. You won t need much more for voice interviews. I haven t noticed the electrical noise mentioned in a previous comment. Playing music MP3s on the unit reveals outstanding playback sound. I have not tried an external mic yet. Terrific screen and well organized. Menus to change recording settings are easy to access and change. Includes AC adapter. Thanks Edirol for not charging us extra for this. Ipod-ish controls are very easy to use and its clear when you are engaging record functions. Easy to read time and level monitor. Unit is very light although thicker than an Ipod. Updating the firmware is a breeze. Good engineering here. Edirol has v. 1.03 online. ANNOYANCES: 1) Getting audio into and out of the unit is unnecessarily cumbersome. For some reason, Edirol chose to put the SD Card and the USB cable plug under the same door as the batteries AT THE BOTTOM of the unit. In order to transfer audio to a computer you have NO CHOICE but open the bottom of the unit. If you have the leather case Edirol is selling for the unit, you will have to remove the R-9 from the case every single time you want to move its files to a computer. EITHER the usb cable plug or the SD slot should have been accessible from the side or top of the unit. Putting them both in the same place and covering it with a hinged door is just inconsiderate when the engineers know that the R-9 is not the final destination of the audio files. This is a significant design flaw because it affects the user every time s he captures audio and is ready to send it to the computer. 2) Also annoying, when you connect via USB the unit does not lie flat on a table surface because the plastic cover juts out and raises the bottom of the unit a half-inch off the table. I have a sinking feeling this cover is going to be among the most common mechanical failures on this unit because it will be used so often and needless stress is exerted on it by design. 3) No lossless compression offered. It would be great if at least one lossless compression format was offered. Conserve diskspace while preserving quality. Just a suggestion. 4) R-9 experiences freezing during mp3 playback. This may be a minor problem as I haven t used this unit long enough to see if its persistent. But playing variable bit rate mp3s on this unit, the unit frequently freezes. 2 or 3 songs may play properly and then the unit freezes. No way to reboot the unit except to open that damned battery usb plug
