Digi 002 Basics
Introducing Digi 002, Digidesign's first FireWire-enabled Pro Tools workstation to include an integrated control surface. Digi 002 offers novices and pros alike hands-on command of any project, easy connectivity via FireWire and integrated I/O, portability, dual mode functionality, and full session compatibility with other Pro Tools systems, from Mbox to Pro Tools|HD. In addition, Digi 002 features a 32-track Pro Tools LE interface based on the same award-winning software used by professionals worldwide. With its spectrum of features and affordable price point, Digi 002 is without peer in the audio production world.
The Essentials
Digi 002 is a full-featured studio-in-a-box that works with your Window XP Home or Mac OS9.x computer to give you all you need for superior MIDI and audio production. Comprised of a single unit that includes a comprehensive control surface along with analog, digital, and MIDI I/O, Digi 002 communicates with your computer via a single FireWire cable (included). Pro Tools LE software comprises the final component, offering 32 tracks of record and playback, 128 MIDI tracks, real-time plug-in support, and a host of additional features. From beginning to end, Digi 002 places you in an ideal position to realize any project.
Enhancers
While Digi 002 is fully functional in and of itself, many products are available to increase the scope and performance of your Digi 002-based Pro Tools LE environment. Although many plug-ins are included in the 002 package, other high-powered RTAS (real-time) and AudioSuite (file-based) plug-ins, designed and built by Digidesign and our Development Partners, are available for virtually every signal processing, sound design, and specialized editing purpose. These software applications work in conjunction with Pro Tools in both non- and real-time formats, emulating and often improving upon the hardware counterparts that they frequently emulate.
The addition of a FireWire drive is also a wise choice, improving the performance of your system by virtue of increased throughput and data transfer speeds. And you always have access to upgrades and updates to Pro Tools LE software, typically available for free to registered users, as we continue to develop new ways of improving your Pro Tools LE experience.
Digi 002 System
Getting your Digi 002 system up and running involves a quick, simple, 4-step process. First, you load your Pro Tools LE software onto your computer. Second, you connect your computer to the Digi 002 unit with the included FireWire cable (PC users will need to first purchase a compatible FireWire card). Third, you power up Digi 002. Fourth, you connect your signal sources Ö mics, instrument cables, patch cords, etc. Ö to the I/O on the back of Digi 002. Lastly, you launch Pro Tools LE software. At that point, you're ready to go. Your audio and MIDI information travel back and forth between your computer and Digi 002 via the FireWire cable, along with information generated by or returned to the Digi 002 control surface. Any changes you make via your Pro Tools software interface are reflected on the control surface and vice versa. It's that simple.
Digi 002 includes 2 modes of operation: Pro Tools mode, described above, and Standalone mode. With the push of a button, your Digi 002 unit enters Standalone mode and becomes an 8x4x2 digital mixer, complete with EQ, dynamics, delay, and reverb with snapshots. Pro Tools LE is disabled in this mode, and your computer is no longer needed for Digi 002 to operate.
With its FireWire connectivity, getting your Digi 002 system up and running is comfortably simple. Plug one end of the included FireWire cable into your computer's FireWire port (the first, if there are more than one) and the other into the Digi 002 hardware unit, power up, launch Pro Tools, and you're ready to go. PC users will need to first purchase a compatible FireWire card. Check out the diagrams below for a couple of configuration examples.

Once you've plugged in your sound sources (mic, keyboard, guitar, and DAT, in this case), you use Pro Tools LE software, Digi 002's I/O and control surface, and the power of your computer to capture, manipulate, and deliver your music to your heart's content. Your audio data is stored on your computer's hard drive or an external hard drive, and is instantly accessible via the Pro Tools sessions you create. Aside from speakers and/or headphones to hear what you're doing, no other hardware or software is needed.
Digi 002 offers more power and flexibility than ever before by currently shipping with Pro Tools LE software and a bundle of plug-ins. Plug-ins included in the v.1 Plug-In Pack are: Digidesign D-Fi, Digidesign D-FX, Digidesign Maxim, IK Multimedia Amplitube, IK Multimedia SampleTank LE, Native Instruments PR0-52, and Waves Renaissance Collection.

Settings & Requirements
Pro Tools Does Not Support Energy Saver. In the Macintosh System Preferences, launch Energy Saver, click the Sleep tab, and disable all Sleep features. Set "Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive" to Never. Do not manually put your computer to sleep when running Pro Tools.

Audio

MIDI

A user-friendly, powerful MIDI sequencer is integrated directly into the Pro Tools application, eliminating the need to learn a complex, third-party MIDI application. Plug-Ins
Plug-ins, add-on software-based tools that work in conjunction with Pro Tools, are an important part of the Pro Tools platform. To use Pro Tools LE’s wide array of high-quality plug-ins, you simply open them within the Pro Tools software interface. At that point, you’re free to use presets, customize settings, interact via MIDI, and/or automate a given plug-in's activity within a mix.
Pro Tools LE-compatible plug-ins take two forms: RTAS and AudioSuite. RTAS (Real-Time AudioSuite) plug-ins provide real-time processing and can be assigned to as many tracks as you like within the limits of your system. RTAS plug-ins are often the same as those found in our professional TDM systems, except that they use your computer’s processing power instead of specialized TDM hardware. AudioSuite plug-ins are non-real time plug-ins that enable you to create new audio files with the effect you’ve chosen printed to that file. Of course, you always have the option of recovering your original file at any time.
Compatibility
Pro Tools is designed to serve as the hub of your music-making universe. To that end, any session you create can be seamlessly moved between both Windows- and Macintosh-based Pro Tools LE and/or TDM systems while retaining all automation, track configurations, MIDI data, and even plug-in assignments. So you’re able to pass your session to a collaborator or take it to a professional studio without compromising your session’s integrity. And because Pro Tools LE systems share the very same user interface as the professional TDM systems, everything you learn using Pro Tools LE is transferable to Pro Tools TDM systems.
