BOSS DR770 Details
The DR-770 Dr. Rhythm
is BOSS' most advanced compact rhythm machine ever, offering a powerful sound
engine with twice as much built-in waveform memory as the DR-660 and four times
as much as other drum machines on the market today. This not only translates
into great new features and powerful sound-shaping capabilities, but to the
highest quality drum and percussion sounds and patterns of any compact rhythm
machine in the world.
Product Description
After years of anticipation, the Boss Doctor Rhythm DR770 drum machine has
arrived. Roland's Boss drum machines have been a big part of the home recording
revolution for a long time. They've freed up songwriters and demo-makers from
having to figure out how to mic and record drums with limited tracks, space and
budget. And with the advent of the DR660, the Boss drum machine sounded so good
that it wasn't thought of as just demo material anymore. Now, finally, we have
the successor to that great machine, the DR770.
Obviously, expectations are pretty high. Does the 770 live up to its name? You
bet. It's got all the popular features from the DR660 model, as well as some
great new enhancements. The DR770 is Boss's finest compact rhythm machine to
date.
Thanks for the Memory!
The first thing that stands out when you check the specs on the DR770 is its
fat 4MB of waveform memory. Boss didn't just see fit to increase the memory on
the DR660Öthey doubled it! With this model, you've got 4 times the memory of
some similar machines. Of course, memory doesn't mean much if the samples are
forgettable. They aren't. These are 255 of the highest-quality drum and
percussion samples ever offered in a Boss rhythm machine. There are 52
different kick drums, 67 different snare and cross-stick sounds, a variety of
sound effects, and four bass guitar sounds collected in 64 drum kits. According
to early User Reviews on Harmony Central (which have been glowing), even
familiar sounds from the DR660 sound better. Especially those all-important
TR808 and 909 sounds: "Sounds to me like they went back on the DR660 and
cleaned up the 909/808 samples. The TR808 kit is beautiful, and I was surprised
to hear so much punch in the 909 kit," says one happy owner. There are also
some amazing new ethnic sounds on the DR770 and 400 new preset patterns in
genres like rock, pop, fusion, world, Latin, and many dance styles.
I Need My Space...
But perhaps the best benefit of the improved memory size is the additional
space for user drum kits and patterns. For a lot of people, the DR660 became
such an essential part of the home studio that they filled up all available
memory. Since there are no storage cards for the DR Series, it then became a
matter of deleting old patterns and songs to create new ones. That shouldn't be
a problem on the DR770. Roland tells us there are slots for 64 user drum kits
and 400 user patterns onboard.
And how long and complex can those patterns get? Well, there's room for 10,000
notes in the internal memory. That should keep you busy for a while! And your
patterns can be quickly navigated by musical genre using the new Quick Search
function, so you won't waste time scrolling through your rhythmic masterworks.
Expressive and Easy
There are a lot of extras on the DR770 that allow you to utilize the great
sounds in highly expressive ways. Like the DR660, it has onboard reverb, delay
and flange. (And again, subjective listening says these sound even better than
the great Boss effects on the previous model!) New to this Dr. Rhythm are high
and low EQ and a new Ambience control that allows global effects and EQ
settings to be applied for instant changes in overall drum sound. Using this
feature you could, say, put a Lo-Fi sound on a Latin drum kit. The combinations
of kits and EQ/effect settings are practically endless and you can save your
distinctive sounds to your own kits and name them. The drum pads' 127-stage
velocity and the Flam/Roll button capture a realistic, live drumming feel. The
DR series machines have always been easy to operate. Now things are even easier
thanks to the Direct Pattern Play mode. This allows instant pattern playback
via one of 16 drum pads. A new optional assignable footswitch can even be
employed to start/stop patterns, trigger fill-ins and kick drums, or
forward/rewind within patterns.
The Bottom Line
If you've ever owned a Roland product, we probably don't have to sell you on
their high quality and innovation. The real question may be which Boss drum
machine suits your needs best. There are 3 great options in the Dr Rhythm line:
For a somewhat limited but very inexpensive machine that you can operate on
batteries, the DR550mkII is the way to go. If you want to pick up what may be
the world's most popular drum machine (and a great value), get the DR550. But
if you want those 4 megs of memory, the latest sounds, Quick Search, footswitch
option, and EQ and Ambience controls, you need the latest and greatestÖthe
DR770.
